FUNDING FOR HEALTH CARE & SOCIAL-SAFETY NET — The 2023 fiscal year budget for Illinois began July 1. This balanced budget used a $444 million surplus to pay down debt, revive the Rainy Day Fund and address violence prevention — among other priorities. Budget-related legislation also addressed the ongoing need, made clearer by the COVID-19 pandemic, to further support crucial health-care and social-service providers. Highlighted here are some of the funds for health care and the state’s social-safety net in the budget that began July 1.
